For centuries throughout all of Asia, Tsuru [pronounced zu-ru] has been a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of a thousand years.

The powerful wings of the crane were believed to be able to convey souls up to paradise and to carry people to higher levels of spiritual enlightenment. Over time, the crane evolved as a favourite subject of the tradition of paper folding – origami.

Legend has it that a thousand folded paper cranes, makes a wish come true. Sadako Sasaki, who suffered from leukemia at the age of 12 after being exposed to radiation of Hiroshima’s bombing in 1945, determined to fold a thousand cranes with a wish of continuing to live, and a world of eternal peace. Although she died completing only 644 paper cranes, her friends completed her thousand cranes and continued to raise money from school children all over Japan to build a statue to honour Sadako and all children affected by the bomb.

"This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace on Earth." - Inscribed on the statue of Sadako Sasaki at Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

Today, the tradition continues as a symbol of world peace.

Tsuru shares the vision of spreading peace upon the wings of cranes. We send this message through our origami style packaging which also enables younger patrons to create an environmentally friendly toy and create a collection of their very own.
With every purchase at Tsuru, you are also helping us support the research for prevention, better treatments and ultimately a promise of a cure of childhood cancer through various Cancer research and prevention organisations.

Translating the very essence of Asian street food, Tsuru is all about its signature steamed pillowy buns. Shaped like a half-moon, the soft pillowy steamed buns sandwich a variety of fillings – the signature Pork Belly Bun (a piece of luscious slow-braised pork belly with cucumber pickles), BBQ Hot & Spicy pork belly, BBQ Teriyaki Chicken, Roast Duck & Lychee, Shiitake and Tofu Teriyaki just to name a few.

In 2012, we created a new line using Asian-style brioche bread and Balinese-inspired lemongrass chicken, and it was awarded Australia’s Best Lunch Roll at the Great Australian Sandwichship Final at Fine Food Show in Melbourne. In 2013, we reinvented the Australian breakfast classic Bacon and Cheese Toast, by serving it with a side Porcini & Shiitake dip. It nailed the Best Toasted category, while our playful number Soft Shell Crab Slider & Tsuru Chips won Best Specialty category.
